About the Opportunity
AXYS Technologies is looking for a full-time Senior Ocean Designer/Engineer based in Sidney, BC (hybrid), with options for remote work across North America. Remote work requires working in the Pacific Time Zone and occasional travel for initial training, team integration, and project specific in person work.
Reporting to the Mechanical Engineering Team Lead, you will play a pivotal role in full-lifecycle mooring projects for advanced environmental monitoring systems, including both surface and subsurface buoys and/or systems. You will be primarily responsible for leading mooring design projects, performing numerical modelling, conducting technical analysis, developing mooring system designs and driving advancements in marine system design and implementation, all while collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to deliver innovative solutions worldwide.
Your essential responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Designing
- Designing and developing metocean technologies for floating, subsea, seabed, and platform-mounted systems
- Running numerical simulations using ProteusDS to analyze mooring tension and platform stability
- Conducting technical analysis of mooring systems, including physical testing
- Producing mooring design drawings and reports and establishing design inputs through metocean condition assessments
- Collaborating with 3rd party companies for new designs, testing, and technical reviews
Program Management
- Communicating design status, risks, and updates to team leads and stakeholders
- Managing active mooring design projects, including scope, deliverables, budgets, and schedules
- Overseeing project execution while ensuring alignment with team goals and client requirements
- Establishing and maintaining resources such as contract workers and cross-functional team members
Department Development
- Developing and maintaining standardized process controls under ISO 9001:2015
- Leading strategic initiatives to improve departmental efficiency and innovation
- Supporting departmental resource planning, including capital budgets and staffing

About You
To qualify, you must have 10+ years of experience with mooring systems, experience with numerical modelling, and ideally a BEng in Mechanical, Coastal, or Ocean Engineering, Physical Oceanography, Computational Fluid Dynamics, or another related discipline.
In addition, you must have the knowledge, skills, or experience in the following:
- Expertise in mooring design and deployment/recovery procedures
- Proficiency in numerical modelling and analysis tools such as ProteusDS, OrcaFlex, and WHOI Cable for modelling and problem-solving across marine, offshore, and electronics applications
- Knowledge of fluid dynamics, hydrostatics, and hydrodynamics
- Python scripting skills for simulation tool development
- Familiarity with 3D CAD software, including parts, assemblies, and file management
- Proven ability to produce high-quality design documentation, including reports and technical manuals
- Experience with ISO 9001:2015 process controls
- Confidence and adaptability to navigate undefined standards, take calculated risks, and develop process controls and standards
- Excellent communication skills to build relationships and engage effectively with stakeholders, from internal clients to global partners
- Holds or is eligible for Professional Engineering designation in BC (asset)
- Willingness and ability to travel when necessary
